Question

Answer

Where am I?

You are looking at the new microbiology textbook. This is an update to the information that was available at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Bacteriology Department's web site. It has been moved here for two reasons.

  1. The new web server is offsite, carefully managed and faster. While the old server was taken care of quite well, the network into the building could become unreliable. A new commercial hosting service is now being used, which should result in better service. Due to the new host and setup, the site loads much faster
  2. The book has gone commercial. The two major chapters that were available at the old site, Bacterial Structure and Animal Defenses Against Microbes are still freely available. However, the book has also been completed, containing 25 chapters - enough for an entire microbiology curriculum. Subscription to the book is only $30.
I hope you enjoy this information and keep learning about microbiology!

Can I get a refund of my subscription?

The answer here is no. There is too much potential for students to cheat. It would be possible to buy a subscription, then download the entire site, and ask for a refund. You should view the subscription the same way you would view buying a piece of software, once you open it up, its yours.

I paid for my subscription through PayPal, but I am not authorized for all the chapters. It's been over 10 min, what is going on?

Subscription processing is automated and you should get instant access to the textbook after your payment has been verified. However, rarely the instant payment notification system fails. If after 1 full day, you are still not able to log into the book, check out the other FAQ questions to make sure you are using the site correctly. If this all fails, then by all means contact Textbook Consortia using the Contact Support Form

I have been authorized to view the book, but cannot view any articles or chapters. What gives?

Nine times out of ten, this is because the user has not logged in. You can check this by looking at what it says in the top right corner of the book web page. If you are not logged in, you will see the word LONGIN. IF this is the case, click on LOGIN to be taken to the login screen. Once there, enter your username and password. If you are logged in, make sure you cannot view the book, by going to the Table of Contents. (There is a handy link in the web site banner, top right of the web site. If all else fails, contact Textbook Consortia using the Contact Support Form

How do I change my password?
